Clinical Ethics Faculty Position

We seek a candidate who will focus their primary efforts on clinical ethics consultation, serving two major medical systems—the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, the state’s only academic health center, and Arkansas Children’s Hospital, which houses the state’s only pediatric intensive care unit and burn center. Candidates for this position should have robust experience in clinical ethics consultation. Responsibilities will also include education of clinical faculty, staff, and trainees.

Given our department’s mission and history, we especially encourage applications from candidates able to support education in health humanities and bioethics.  

Applicants for an assistant professor-level appointment must have a terminal degree in one of the following: a humanities or social science discipline, law, medicine, nursing, or other health profession. Master’s degree-level training will be considered for an instructor position. Salary will be commensurate with rank and relevant experience, following the APBD salary survey and AAMC’s national medical school salary survey for Ph.D.s in bioethics. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Department

Originally established as a freestanding Division in the UAMS College of Medicine in 1982, the Department of Medical Humanities & Bioethics currently provides ethics education, consultation and other support throughout the institution and its affiliated partners, including Arkansas Children’s Hospital.  The Department is particularly proud of its many offerings by nationally recognized faculty in a broad range of medical humanities, including literature, art, and law. Also, the university has several initiatives in neuroscience, data warehouse and bioinformatics, as well as personalized medicine that all require careful ethical and humanities considerations. These and other initiatives provide vast opportunities for bioethics and humanities scholars to participate in substantive, meaningful work.
