Derek McCracken, Director of Marketing & Outreach for Narrative Mindworks, featured in Advocate Health's Narrative Medicine May newsletter In the "Stop Look and Listen" column: Derek McCracken, 2024 conference panelist, moved from the Midwest to New York in 2014 to study narrative medicine at Columbia University. He teaches narrative medicine pedagogy, facilitates onsite workshops, and serves as the Director of Marketing and Outreach for Narrative MIndworks, the international association for narrative practices. Here is what Derek is reading, listening to and watching. Here's what he said: Reading: Start With the Story: Brand-Building in a Narrative Economy, by Kristian Aloma. His approach to narrative psychology has helped me close read healthcare marketing campaigns and relate to people who value narrative methods but who may be skeptical.
Listening To: Podcasts Healthcare is Human and All There Is. The first uses story as a way to connect with patients at narrative intersections; the second is Anderson Cooper's podcast that asks "Do we ever move on from grief, or do we just learn to live with it?"
Watching: I'm attending as many Tony-nominated Broadway shows as I can before the June telecast: Tommy, Stereophonic, Like Water for Elephants, Appropriate, The Outsiders, Suffs, Illinoise, and Hell's Kitchen. I remain curious about how stories morph from a playwright's mind to the page to the stage.
