Story Club with George Saunders is an online community led by the acclaimed author, designed to explore the art of storytelling through lectures, readings, and interactive discussions. It provides participants with unique insights into writing techniques and storytelling, directly from Saunders and special guests, fostering a creative and supportive environment for writers at all levels.
If you have participated in a basic narrative medicine workshop, you’ll be familiar with the close reading, discussion, and writing process. Here's how Story Club works:
Twice a week subscribers receive a short story.
Saunders explains the process:
“What I recommend is that we read the story once, for fun. Then, live with it a bit, without any particular agenda. In this phase, I’m just turning my mind to the story. Was it good? Where, in particular, did it move me? What expectations did it set up?
Then, read the story a second time, making whatever notes you feel like making – in the margins, in a notebook.
Then, in the Comments, we discuss. Don’t worry about being correct – any reaction is a valid place to start. The main thing is to notice what you are feeling as you read, and where, and then try to articulate that.”
